Scientists have cracked part of the code on how we recognize words so quickly. New research shows your brain has a clear preference for certain types of similar-looking words when you read.

Your brain processes words by comparing them to word neighbors with similar spellings. But not all spelling similarities are equal — words that can be formed by adding letters to other words (like CREAM and CREAMY) have the biggest impact on how fast you read.

Reading involves complex relationships between spelling, sound, and meaning. When you see a word, your brain instantly checks it against similar words you know. This happens automatically and affects how quickly you recognize what you're reading.
Researchers from Waseda University in Japan and the University of Western Ontario tested three types of word neighbors:
- Addition neighbors (CAT to CATS)
- Substitution neighbors (CAT to BAT)
- Deletion neighbors (SEAT to SAT)
The research used advanced computer models to measure word meanings and conducted experiments with human participants. Both approaches showed the same results across different studies.

The study found that addition neighbors matter most, but they work in two opposite ways:
- Speed boost: Related words help you read faster. CREAMY makes you recognize CREAM quicker because they share meaning.
- Speed bump: Unrelated words slow you down. SCREAM makes you recognize CREAM slower because they don't share meaning despite similar spelling.
Your brain developed this system to prevent confusion. When unrelated words look similar, your mental processes slow down to avoid activating the wrong meaning.
